Undergraduate Student Safety Checklist (Off Campus Housing)
- Program the Department of Public Safety’s phone number (202-687-4343) into your cell phone and report suspicious activity to DPS (or MPD at 911).
- Program the GERMS phone number, 202-687-HELP (4357), into your phone. Call GERMS for any medical emergency while on campus or in the immediate vicinity (West Georgetown, Burleith, Foxhall).
- Sign up for HOYAlert, the University’s emergency notification system, at http://limited.georgetown.edu/StudentAccess/.
- Lock your door!
- Take the West Georgetown and Burleith Shuttles when you travel around the neighborhood on weekend evenings.
- Use SafeRides any night you go out in the neighborhood; program the SafeRides number, 202-784-RIDE (7433), into your cell phone.
- Walk with friends while out in the city.
- Don’t leave your belongings unattended or unsecured.
- Register your laptop and/or bicycle.
- Carry your GOCard at all times.
- Read the Public Safety Alerts (PSAs) you receive by email in the event of a crime on or near campus.
- Prevent and prepare for H1N1. That includes keeping some food on hand in case you need to stay home for 4-7 days.
- Respect our neighbors. Keep the noise down at night when you're traveling through the community and put trash in proper receptacles.
- Check your family’s homeowners insurance policies to ensure personal property is covered, or purchase insurance; inventory your valuables (to include a brief description, make, model, serial number, and a picture).
