Georgetown University Test, Training & Exercise (TT & E) Program

June 9, 2008 - Exercise Hoya Shield 2008

The Office of University Safety, Department of Emergency Management, coordinated a university-wide interactive tabletop exercise.  The day-long exercise began with the activation of both the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and the Leadership Operations Center (LOC).  Both the Emergency Response Team (in the EOC) and the University Leadership (in the LOC) were presented the scenario of a fire/explosion in a major university laboratory building.  During lunch, a team of crisis management consultants provided exercise participants with a presentation of lessons learned from Virginia Tech and Hurricane Katrina. The exercise resumed in the afternoon in a traditional tabletop discussion forum.

November 20, 2008 - Georgetown University SFS-Qatar Tabletop Exercise

In November 2008, Office of University designed two tabletop scenarios to exercise the Georgetown University SFS-Qatar Campus Emergency Response Team. VP of University Safety facilitated the tabletop scenarios and discussions to exercise Georgetown's response to an incident at the University's Qatar Campus. Two scenarios were depicted: a large building fire and an outbreak of norovirus that included personnel potentially infected traveling back to Georgetown University Main Campus. The exercises were a success and many lessons learned were gleaned from the scenarios and discussion.

December 17, 2008 - ERT Exercise 2008-2009 #1 - Fire in the Evening

Prior to the holiday break, the Department of Emergency Management designed and facilitated an Emergency Response Team (ERT) tabletop exercise involving a major residence hall fire. The fire scenario was designed to occur during the evening hours to address unique challenges in late night building evacuation, emergency communication protocols, and staffing concerns for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). As a result, the ERT was able to discuss and improve their response processes for a major evacuation on campus. In particular, multiple initiatives were created to address lessons learned in evacuation planning and coordination.

March 18, 2009 - ERT Exercise 2008-2009 #2 - New Student Tornado

During New Student Orientation in August of each year, thousands of people, are visiting or arriving on GU's main campus. In this scenario, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) was faced with new student orientation activities coupled with degrading weather conditions. The weather developments culminated with a brief F2 tornado touchdown on campus. This gave the ERT an opportunity to discuss shelter-in-place (SIP) emergency response procedures.
